Children's Hearing Services

Hearing Testing

Our Children's Hearing Services team offers hearing testing for children, both in the community at clinics located around North Wales, and in our specialised hospital department at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

Newborn babies born in Wales are also screened for hearing loss before they leave hospital or within the home. This is run by Newborn Hearing Screening Wales, and the North Wales Divisional Office is based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Our Children's Hearing Services team supports the screening programme with referrals for further testing.

Treatment and Management

We also offer further treatment and management should a hearing loss be found, in collaboration with other hospital departments. Our service covers a number of areas in Wales including Wrexham, Flintshire and North Powys (north of Llandrindod Wells) and is based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

There are different types of hearing loss that a child may experience, as well as different amounts of hearing loss. These have different impacts on the child's ability to hear. Whatever the hearing ability, there are a number of communication tips that may help you to communicate successfully with your child.

When a hearing loss has been found, we work with other hospital departments to offer treatment of the ear and/or management of your child's hearing. The options available depend on your child's individual hearing loss. You may be referred to the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department. Here they will be able to assess possible treatment options for your child's particular hearing loss. We may be able to help by providing hearing aids for your child. For information specific to your child, speak to the Children's Services team at your next appointment.
